What is domain reputation?

Domain reputation is how much mailbox providers trust mail from your domain. A high reputation means Gmail, Outlook and Yahoo deliver your mail to the inbox; a low one means your messages get filtered to spam or blocked entirely. It behaves like a feedback loop: good reputation earns inbox placement, which earns engagement, which reinforces the reputation - and the inverse is a death spiral where spam-folder placement kills engagement and drags the score down further.

This tool builds a quick composite score from the signals under your control: whether SPF, DKIM, and DMARC are configured and enforcing, whether your domain has working mail servers, and whether it appears on the public blacklists we can query. It is a heuristic, not an ISP-grade score, but a low result here almost always means real, fixable problems.

How reputation is calculated

Mailbox providers weigh a handful of behavioral and technical signals. These are the ones that move the needle.

Bounce rate

Keep it under 2 percent. High bounces signal poor list hygiene and are one of the fastest ways to lose reputation.

Domain reputation vs IP reputation

Domain reputation is tied to your sending address and DKIM signature. It follows the domain wherever it sends and is now Gmail's primary inbox-placement factor. IP reputation is tied to the mail server's IP - the older system, still weighted heavily at Outlook, and the one that bites you on shared infrastructure when a neighbor misbehaves.

For most senders, domain reputation matters more than IP reputation. When the two conflict, providers tend to default to the lower score, so you want both clean. Building a new domain's reputation takes two to four weeks of careful warmup, and four to eight weeks of clean sending to reach a solidly trusted state.

How is the reputation score calculated?

Is this the same as Google Postmaster Tools?

No. Google and Microsoft keep true sender reputation private and show it only to the domain owner (via Postmaster Tools and SNDS). This is an external heuristic based on public DNS and blacklist data.

How long does it take to build reputation?

Plan on two to four weeks of gradual warmup to establish a baseline, and four to eight weeks of clean, consistent sending to reach a strongly trusted state on a new domain.

Can you fix a bad reputation?

Yes, usually in two to six weeks. Stop the behavior that caused it, fix authentication, clean your lists, drop volume, and rebuild engagement gradually. Reputation recovers when the signals improve.

Does domain age affect reputation?

Sending history matters far more than the registration date. An aged but never-used domain is treated much like a brand-new one, so warm it up regardless of how old the registration is.
